In the Algarve, Monchique Mountains
The Serra de Monchique is one of the most attractive areas
of the Algarve and one that offers a complete contrast to the resorts
of the coast. This unspoilt mountainous region is one of Portugal’s
best-kept secrets. The area is green and wooded, with the peak at
Foia reaching almost 3000 feet, whilst Picota reaches over 2500. The
massif is of volcanic origin and provides the thermal springs for
the spa at Caldas de Monchique, well worth a visit to take the waters.
Monchique town, by comparison, is a bustling place with shops and
restaurants serving dishes like chicken piri piri, and good local
market. A holiday in Monchique is the perfect place to unwind, and
savour the magnificent views, but if you want to be more energetic
take a walk through the woods, go riding, bird watching, or follow
an organised mountain bike tour. If you yearn for the bright lights
of the coast they are no more than 30 minutes drive away.
